Why vibe code your own data tools

Why build your own

Your data stack, built by you

Most data questions are small and specific. With an AI coding tool, the reports and checks you repeat are within reach of a weekend, built around your own numbers.

Answer the question you actually have.

Big analytics platforms show everything to everyone. A small tool built around your own metrics shows the five numbers you check and leaves out the rest.

Stop rebuilding the same report.

If you paste the same export into the same spreadsheet every month, that job is already a clear spec. Describe the steps once and let the tool repeat them.

Check the work as you go.

Small tools keep the logic easy to read. You can see each step, compare results against a sample you trust, and fix what looks wrong.

Tips for your first data build

  1. Start with a report you already make by hand. Its steps are your spec.
  2. Test with a small sample where you already know the right answer, and compare the results before you trust it.
  3. Keep the first version to one source and one question. Live connections and scheduling can come later.
  4. Use read-only access for real databases, and leave out personal or sensitive data until you have checked how the tool handles it.
  5. Have the AI explain any query or calculation it writes, and keep the logic where you can read it.
